Does CoQ10 Lower Blood Pressure?

Quick answer

Maybe a little, in some people, and the evidence is split. A Cochrane review of two small trials found no clinically significant change. A 2022 review of 26 trials found systolic pressure about 4.8 mmHg lower, with no clear change in the bottom number. Those studies looked at CoQ10 alone, not Cardio Clear 7, which has never been tested for blood pressure.

01Short version

What is the short answer on CoQ10 and blood pressure?

The research does not agree, and the possible effect is small. That is the plain reading of the two biggest reviews.

Health agencies land in different places too. NCCIH says CoQ10 probably does not have a meaningful effect on blood pressure (NCCIH - Coenzyme Q10). Mayo Clinic calls the findings mixed and says CoQ10 might help (Mayo Clinic - Coenzyme Q10). Both are careful, and neither calls it a treatment.

Cardio Clear 7 is a dietary supplement with 100 mg CoQ10, 80 mg shilajit extract and 10 mg PQQ in each capsule (Simple Promise store listing). Its bottle says "Supports a Healthy Heart*". It does not make a blood pressure claim on the front. The store copy goes further with talk of normalizing blood pressure, but no trial of the product backs that wording.

02Review one

What did the Cochrane review find?

It found no clinically significant effect. Cochrane reviews are known for strict rules about which trials count, and this one kept very few.

The 2016 review looked at three trials but pooled only two, with 50 people in total. It left one trial out because its risk of bias was too high (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension). The authors rated their conclusion as moderate-quality evidence that CoQ10 does not change blood pressure in a way that matters for people with primary hypertension (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension).

Fifty people is a very small base. A small review can miss a small effect. Still, it is a clear warning against any ad that treats CoQ10 as a sure thing for blood pressure.

03Review two

What did the larger 2022 review find?

It found a modest drop in the top number only. Zhao and colleagues pooled 26 randomized trials with 1,831 people who had cardiometabolic disorders such as diabetes or heart disease (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response).

The dose curve was U-shaped. That means the biggest effect showed up around 100-200 mg a day, not at the highest doses (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). One Cardio Clear 7 capsule holds 100 mg, the bottom of that range.

Why the reviews differ

They studied different people. Many in the larger review were already taking heart or diabetes medicines (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). Results in that group may not carry over to a healthy adult, or to someone with hypertension alone.

04Reading the numbers

How big is a 4.8 mmHg change?

Small, and an average across many people. Some in the trials saw more, some saw less and some saw nothing.

mmHg means millimeters of mercury, the unit on every blood pressure cuff. The American Heart Association groups readings into bands (AHA - Understanding BP Readings):

  • Normal: under 120 and under 80.
  • Elevated: 120-129 and under 80.
  • Stage 1: 130-139 or 80-89.
  • Stage 2: 140 or higher, or 90 or higher.

A reading of 146 that fell by about 5 points would still sit in stage 2. Home readings also swing by more than that from one minute to the next. One reading before and one after a bottle tells you very little. Our blood pressure numbers guide shows how to take readings that mean something.

05Bigger levers

What moves blood pressure more than a supplement?

Daily habits and prescribed care. These have far more research behind them than any capsule.

01

Less salt

The DASH plan lists 2,300 mg sodium a day, and NHLBI notes that 1,500 mg lowers pressure even further (NHLBI - DASH Eating Plan).

02

DASH-style meals

Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts and fish, with fewer sugary drinks and sweets (NHLBI - DASH Eating Plan).

03

Move most days

The AHA suggests 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (AHA - Life's Essential 8).

04

Sleep and no tobacco

Seven to nine hours of sleep and quitting tobacco are part of the AHA's Life's Essential 8 (AHA - Life's Essential 8).

The brand video line "Eat what you want" sits poorly with this. What you eat matters for blood pressure, whatever capsule you take.

06Medicines

Can you take CoQ10 with blood pressure medicine?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. NCI notes that blood pressure drugs may lower CoQ10's effects, and CoQ10 may change how the body uses insulin and warfarin (NCI PDQ - Coenzyme Q10).

If CoQ10 did nudge pressure down a little, it could stack on top of a pill. Watch for dizziness when you stand, and bring your home log to each visit.

Keep your prescription

Keep taking prescribed medicine; never stop or change it because of a supplement. A reading over 180/120 with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision change or trouble speaking means call 911 (AHA - Understanding BP Readings).

07Bottom line

So should you buy CoQ10 for blood pressure?

Not as a blood pressure plan. If you want to try CoQ10 for general heart support, treat it as an extra, and expect a small effect at most.

The fair facts about Cardio Clear 7: the CoQ10 dose matches the low end of the trials, it is one capsule a day, and the store offers a 365-day money-back guarantee (Cardio Clear 7 info page). The weak spots: no trial of the product, and store copy that reads like a disease claim. Our claims vs evidence page walks through each one.

08FAQ

CoQ10 and blood pressure: FAQ

How much does CoQ10 lower blood pressure?

In a 2022 review of 26 trials, systolic pressure was about 4.77 mmHg lower on average, and the bottom number did not change significantly (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). A Cochrane review of two trials found no clinically significant effect (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension). Any change is small and varies by person.

What dose of CoQ10 was used in blood pressure studies?

The 2022 review saw the largest effect at about 100-200 mg a day, in a U-shaped curve where higher doses did not do better (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). One Cardio Clear 7 capsule has 100 mg of CoQ10, the low end of that range.

Does Cardio Clear 7 lower blood pressure?

No study shows that. The product has never been tested for blood pressure, and the front of the bottle makes no blood pressure claim. The CoQ10 research comes from studies of CoQ10 alone, with mixed results (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension) (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response).

Is CoQ10 safe with lisinopril or amlodipine?

Ask your pharmacist. No specific warning for those drugs appears in our sources, but NCI notes blood pressure drugs may lower CoQ10's effects (NCI PDQ - Coenzyme Q10). Any small added drop in pressure could leave you dizzy, so share your home readings with your doctor.

How long does CoQ10 take to affect blood pressure?

There is no clear timeline. The trials in the 2022 review were mostly small and short-term (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). Take readings at the same time each day for several weeks and compare averages, not single numbers, with your doctor.

Does CoQ10 affect diastolic blood pressure?

Not clearly. The 2022 review found a diastolic change of about 1.67 mmHg that was not statistically significant, with low certainty (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). The Cochrane review found no clinically significant change in either number (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension).

Who should not take CoQ10 for blood pressure?

Anyone on warfarin, insulin or blood pressure medicine should ask a doctor first (Mayo Clinic - Coenzyme Q10) (NCI PDQ - Coenzyme Q10). The brand says it is not for pregnant or nursing women (Cardio Clear 7 info page). Nobody should use it in place of prescribed treatment.
