Guide
What do your blood pressure numbers actually mean?
A reading has two numbers. Systolic, the top one, is the pressure as your heart beats. Diastolic, the bottom one, is the pressure between beats. The American Heart Association calls under 120/80 normal, 120-129 elevated, 130-139 or 80-89 stage 1, and 140 or 90 and up stage 2. Over 180/120 with symptoms means call 911.

01The basics
What are systolic and diastolic pressure?
Systolic pressure is the push on your artery walls each time the heart squeezes. Diastolic pressure is what remains while the heart relaxes and refills.
Both are measured in millimeters of mercury, written mmHg. A reading of 132/84 is spoken as "132 over 84". The first number is almost always the larger one.
Most people with high blood pressure feel nothing at all. Years of extra force can still wear on the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes. So a cuff tells you far more than how you feel on a given morning.
A single number is a moment in time. Coffee, a cold room, pain, a full bladder or a rushed walk can lift it for a while. Your doctor judges the trend across many readings, not one.
02AHA categories
Which AHA blood pressure category is your reading in?
The AHA sorts adult readings into five groups, from normal to severe (AHA - Understanding BP Readings). Enter your top and bottom numbers in the finder to see your group.
- NormalUnder 120 and under 80
- Elevated120-129 and under 80
- Stage 1130-139 or 80-89
- Stage 2140+ or 90+
- SevereOver 180 and/or over 120
Type a reading to see its AHA category. Use the average of several readings, not one.
Categories from the American Heart Association (AHA - Understanding BP Readings). Over 180/120 with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision change or trouble speaking: call 911.
| Category | Top number | Link | Bottom number | Typical next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Under 120 | and | Under 80 | Keep up daily habits; recheck at routine visits |
| Elevated | 120-129 | and | Under 80 | Work on food, salt and activity; recheck soon |
| Stage 1 | 130-139 | or | 80-89 | Talk with your clinician about habits and maybe medicine |
| Stage 2 | 140 or higher | or | 90 or higher | Habits plus, very often, prescribed medicine |
| Severe | Over 180 | and/or | Over 120 | Retest after a minute; 911 if symptoms appear |
Watch the words "and" and "or". If your two numbers fall in different groups, the higher group wins. A reading of 124/86 counts as stage 1, because 86 sits in the stage 1 range. Only a medical professional can confirm a diagnosis (AHA - Understanding BP Readings).
03Home checks
How do you take an accurate reading at home?
Use an upper-arm cuff that fits, and repeat the same routine each time. Small changes in posture or timing can shift a result by several points.
Wait 30 minutes
No coffee, smoking or exercise first. Use the bathroom before you start.
Sit still
Back against the chair, feet flat, legs uncrossed. Rest your arm on a table at heart height for five quiet minutes.
Bare arm
Place the cuff on skin just above the elbow, never over a sleeve. Do not talk while it inflates.
Two readings
Take a second reading a minute later. Write both down with the date and time.
Pick two fixed times, such as before breakfast and before dinner. Once a year, bring your monitor to a visit so the nurse can compare it with the office device.
04Your log
How should you read a week of home numbers?
Look at the weekly average rather than the highest number. One spike after a tense phone call is not a diagnosis, and one calm reading does not mean the problem is gone.
- Average it: add up the top numbers and divide by how many there are. Repeat for the bottom numbers.
- Add notes: poor sleep, a salty dinner, pain or a missed dose all explain odd results.
- Compare places: some people read higher at the clinic from nerves, and a few read higher at home. A log helps sort that out.
- Share, do not react: bring the log to each visit instead of changing anything on your own.
Starting a new habit or any supplement? Log one week before, then keep going. You and your doctor then have a fair before-and-after record instead of a guess.
05Urgent readings
What blood pressure reading means you should call 911?
A reading over 180/120 is in the severe range. Without symptoms, wait one minute and test again; if it stays that high, contact your clinician right away (AHA - Understanding BP Readings).
Call if a reading over 180/120 comes with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, a change in vision or trouble speaking (AHA - Understanding BP Readings). Do not wait for the number to drop on its own.
Heart attack signs
Chest pressure or pain, pain in the arm, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, a cold sweat, nausea or light-headedness need 911 whatever the cuff says (AHA - Heart Attack Warning Signs). See our heart attack warning signs guide.
A slow climb
A weekly average drifting from elevated into stage 1 calls for a phone call to your clinician, not the emergency room. Have your log ready.

Which daily habits matter most for blood pressure?
Food, salt, movement, sleep and weight lead the list. Blood pressure is one of the AHA's Life's Essential 8 measures, and the other seven feed into it (AHA - Life's Essential 8).
| Habit | What the guidance says |
|---|---|
| DASH eating | Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, nuts and vegetable oils; fewer sweets and sugary drinks (NHLBI - DASH Eating Plan) |
| Sodium | No more than 2,300 mg a day; 1,500 mg brings readings down further (NHLBI - DASH Eating Plan) |
| Activity | 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week (AHA - Life's Essential 8) |
| Sleep | 7 to 9 hours a night for adults (AHA - Life's Essential 8) |
| Tobacco | Quitting is one of the eight core measures (AHA - Life's Essential 8) |
07Medicine
Why do so many people need blood pressure medicine?
Habits help, but genes, age and kidney health also set your numbers, so many people need medicine on top. That is common and nothing to feel bad about.
If a pill bothers you, tell your clinician. There are several drug families, and a switch or a dose change is often easy. Keep taking prescribed medicine; never stop or change it because of a supplement.
08Where supplements fit
Does a CoQ10 supplement like Cardio Clear 7 change your readings?
No study has tested Cardio Clear 7 on blood pressure, so no one can say it moves your numbers. It is a dietary supplement, not a treatment for high blood pressure.
Research on CoQ10 alone is split. A Cochrane review pooled two small trials and found no clinically significant effect (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension). A 2022 review of 26 trials in people with heart and metabolic conditions found systolic readings about 4.8 points lower, with no clear change in the bottom number (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). Many of those people also took prescribed drugs.
The bottle claim "Supports a Healthy Heart*" carries the FDA asterisk, meaning the agency has not evaluated it (FDA - Dietary Supplements Q&A). CoQ10 may add to the effect of blood pressure medicine (NCI PDQ - Coenzyme Q10), so ask your pharmacist before you start. Read the full story in does CoQ10 lower blood pressure?

09Bottom line
Your blood pressure numbers in one minute
Under 120/80 is normal, and the higher of your two numbers sets the group. Measure the same way each time and judge the average. Over 180/120 with symptoms is a 911 call.
10FAQ
Blood pressure numbers: questions people search
What is a normal blood pressure for a 70 year old?
The AHA uses one set of categories for every adult, so under 120/80 is normal at 70 as well. Pressure often climbs with age, but that does not make a higher number harmless. Your clinician may set a personal goal based on your health, falls risk and medicines.
Is 135/85 considered high blood pressure?
Yes. A reading of 135/85 falls in AHA stage 1, because a top number of 130-139 or a bottom number of 80-89 puts it there. One reading is not a diagnosis, so your clinician will look at repeated readings, ideally a home log, before choosing next steps.
Which blood pressure number matters more, top or bottom?
Both matter. After about age 50 the top number is often the stronger signal of heart and stroke risk, yet a high bottom number still counts. The AHA group is set by whichever number lands in the higher category, so neither one can be ignored.
Why is blood pressure higher in the morning?
Body hormones rise in the early hours to wake you up, and they push pressure up for a while. Taking readings at the same morning time, before coffee and before breakfast, keeps them comparable. Ask your clinician if your morning numbers run much higher than evening ones.
Are wrist blood pressure cuffs accurate?
Upper-arm cuffs are usually preferred, because wrist readings shift a lot with arm position. If you use a wrist cuff, hold your wrist at heart level every time. Either way, compare your device with the clinic's monitor once a year.
How many times a day should I check my blood pressure?
Many people take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, for a week before a visit. When things are stable, a few days each month may be enough. If your clinician gave you a schedule, follow that one instead.
Can a supplement replace blood pressure pills?
No. No supplement has been shown to do the job of prescribed blood pressure medicine, and FDA does not approve supplements before sale. Some, like CoQ10, may add to a drug's effect, so ask your pharmacist first and keep every prescribed dose.
