Shilajit in Cardio Clear 7: an old resin with thin research

Quick answer

Each Cardio Clear 7 capsule lists 80 mg of shilajit extract, a mineral resin used in Ayurveda. The store says it boosts the efficiency of CoQ10, but that idea comes from rat and test-tube work, not people. Human trials used 250-500 mg a day, tested strength and hormones, and never looked at the heart.

01The basics

What is shilajit made of?

Shilajit is a dark, sticky resin that seeps from mountain rock, mostly in the Himalayas. It forms over long periods as plant matter breaks down between layers of stone.

It is rich in fulvic acid and also holds minerals and small plant-derived compounds. Traditional Ayurvedic practice has used it for centuries as a general tonic. Raw resin is cleaned and dried into a powder or extract before it goes into capsules.

The store lists 80 mg of shilajit extract per Cardio Clear 7 capsule (Simple Promise store listing). It does not name the supplier, the purity standard or the fulvic acid content. Our shilajit explainer covers its history in more depth.

02The brand claim

Does shilajit really boost CoQ10?

Not in any human study we could find. The store says the formula "Contains Shilajit Extract that boosts the efficiency of CoQ10" (Simple Promise store listing). The research behind that kind of claim used rats and test tubes (Bhattacharyya 2009 - shilajit and CoQ).

The animal study behind "shilajit boosts CoQ10," in plain numbers (Bhattacharyya 2009 - shilajit and CoQ)
DetailWhat the study didWhy it matters
SubjectsRats, 4 per group, plus mice and test tubesNo people at all
What they gotCoQ10 plus one isolated shilajit compound, 5 mg/kg each, for 5 daysA purified compound, not a whole extract
LiverTotal CoQ rose from 19.41 to 25.03 nmol/gThe clearest change was in the liver
Heart35.69 to 36.99 nmol/gAlmost no change where it would matter most
BloodNo meaningful changeNo sign of better CoQ10 levels in circulation

The FTC says animal and test-tube studies alone are not enough to back a health claim (FTC - Health Products Compliance Guide). So we report the brand's words, but we do not repeat them as fact. Every brand claim is checked on the claims vs evidence page.

03Human research

What have human shilajit trials actually tested?

Muscle strength and testosterone, not the heart. The two best-known trials were small, used a branded purified extract, and were tied to the company that makes it (Keller 2019 - shilajit strength RCT) (Pandit trial - shilajit testosterone).

  1. Strength in young men

63 active young men took 250 mg, 500 mg or placebo for 8 weeks. The 500 mg group lost less strength after a tiring workout (Keller 2019 - shilajit strength RCT).

  2. Hormones in middle-aged men

75 men aged 45-55 took 500 mg a day for 90 days. Total testosterone rose about 20% versus placebo (Pandit trial - shilajit testosterone).

  3. Independent grading

Examine.com grades every human shilajit outcome as C, meaning the evidence is preliminary (Examine - Shilajit evidence summary).

Neither trial measured blood pressure, cholesterol or heart health. The supplier funded or made the product in both cases.

04Dose

Is 80 mg of shilajit enough to do anything?

It is well below the doses people were given in trials. At 80 mg, one capsule holds less than a third of the lowest 250 mg dose in the strength study (Keller 2019 - shilajit strength RCT).

What one Cardio Clear 7 capsule holds (official store listing (Simple Promise store listing)), next to what research used for each ingredient alone.
IngredientPer capsuleAmount used in researchEvidence
CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10)100 mg100-200 mg a day in blood pressure trials; 300 mg a day in the Q-SYMBIO heart-failure trial (NCCIH - Coenzyme Q10) (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension) (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response) (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014)Mixed: no clear blood pressure effect in Cochrane; about 4.8 mmHg systolic in a 2022 review
Shilajit Extract80 mg250-500 mg a day of a branded purified extract in small human trials (Bhattacharyya 2009 - shilajit and CoQ) (Keller 2019 - shilajit strength RCT) (Pandit trial - shilajit testosterone) (Examine - Shilajit evidence summary)Preliminary: small, supplier-funded trials; no heart studies
PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone Disodium Salt)10 mg20 mg a day in a 12-week memory trial (Food Funct 2023 - PQQ 20 mg trial) (Yan 2024 - PQQ review)Thin: mostly animal and lab work; no heart trials found
Other ingredientsNot listed by weightCellulose, Hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (capsule), Vegetable stearic acid, Vegetable magnesium stearate, Silicon dioxideInactive: they hold and shape the powder

A smaller amount is not automatically useless, and it may also mean less exposure to any impurities. But there is no human evidence for what 80 mg does, alone or next to CoQ10.

05The photo

What does the '3X' brand photo show?

A styled product shot, not a lab result. It shows the bottle with dark shilajit pieces, two capsules, kiwi halves and a badge that reads "Contains 3X the power & nutrients for a healthy heart."

  • The badge never says three times what. No comparison product or test is named.
  • Kiwi is not an ingredient. It does not appear on the store's ingredient list (Simple Promise store listing).
  • The dark chunks show raw resin. The capsule holds a processed extract.

Photos set a mood. The ingredient list and the dose tell you what is in the bottle.

06Purity

Can shilajit contain heavy metals?

Some Ayurvedic products have, so testing matters. Raw shilajit comes from rock, and poorly cleaned resin can carry lead, arsenic or mercury.

What independent testing has found
SourceFinding
JAMA, 2008 (Saper 2008 JAMA - Ayurvedic metals)20.7% of 193 Ayurvedic products bought online held lead, mercury or arsenic
NCCIH (NCCIH - Ayurvedic Medicine)40% of surveyed Ayurvedic product users had raised blood lead
ConsumerLab, 2024 (ConsumerLab 2024 - shilajit tests)8 shilajit supplements tested; none above heavy metal levels of concern

The newer shilajit-specific test is reassuring, but it covered other brands. Simple Promise has not published a lab report for Cardio Clear 7. The lot code is a seller reference, not proof of testing. See testing and quality for what to ask the store.

07Safety

Who should be careful with shilajit?

Anyone pregnant or nursing, and anyone on regular medicine. The brand says Cardio Clear 7 is not for pregnant or nursing women, and anyone on medicine should ask a doctor first (Cardio Clear 7 info page).

Drug interaction data for shilajit are thin, and the small trials reported no adverse events in healthy men (Keller 2019 - shilajit strength RCT). That is not the same as proven safe for older adults with heart conditions.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never stop or change any prescription because of a supplement. Bring the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist so they can check the full list.

08More ingredients

How does shilajit fit with the rest of the formula?

It plays a supporting role. CoQ10 carries most of the formula's research weight, and PQQ is the third active. Compare all three on the ingredients overview.

09FAQ

Shilajit questions people search for

What are the proven benefits of shilajit?

None are firmly proven yet. Small trials linked 250-500 mg a day of a purified extract to less strength loss and higher testosterone in men. No human study has tested shilajit for heart health, blood pressure or cholesterol, and Examine grades the research as preliminary.

How long can you take shilajit?

Human trials ran from 8 weeks to 90 days, and the 8-week trial in healthy young men reported no adverse events. Long-term data are scarce, and purity varies by product. Pregnant or nursing women should skip it, and anyone on medicine should ask a doctor first.

Does shilajit raise testosterone?

One trial of 75 men aged 45-55 found total testosterone about 20% higher after 90 days on 500 mg a day. That trial was tied to the extract's supplier, and Cardio Clear 7 holds 80 mg, far less than that dose.

Does shilajit help the heart?

No human trial has shown that. The claim that it helps CoQ10 work better comes from a rat study where liver CoQ rose but heart levels barely changed. The human trials studied muscles and hormones, not the heart.

How do I know if shilajit is pure?

Look for a lab report, often called a certificate of analysis, that lists lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium. Cardio Clear 7 has no published lab report, so ask the Simple Promise store for one before you buy if purity matters to you.

How much fulvic acid is in shilajit?

It varies by product. Fulvic acid is one of the main compounds in shilajit, but the resin also holds minerals and other substances. A 2024 ConsumerLab test found one product with far more fulvic acid than its label suggested, so contents vary between brands.
