CoQ10 in Cardio Clear 7: what 100 mg can and cannot do

Quick answer

Each Cardio Clear 7 capsule holds 100 mg of CoQ10, according to the official store. That is the low end of the 100-200 mg range used in blood pressure trials and a third of the 300 mg used in a heart failure trial. Results are mixed, no trial tested this product, and CoQ10 can interact with warfarin.

01The basics

What is CoQ10, and why is it in Cardio Clear 7?

CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is a compound your own body makes. Cells use it to turn food into energy, and it also works as an antioxidant (NCI PDQ - Coenzyme Q10).

The heart is packed with mitochondria, the small power plants inside cells. That is why CoQ10 shows up in so many heart formulas. In Cardio Clear 7 it is the largest active, at 100 mg per capsule (Simple Promise store listing).

The brand photo shows "Co Q10" and the word ubidecarenone printed on the capsules. Ubidecarenone is the chemical name for ubiquinone, the most common form sold. The other form, ubiquinol, is explained in our ubiquinone vs ubiquinol guide.

Strength of evidenceMixed: no clear blood pressure effect in Cochrane; about 4.8 mmHg systolic in a 2022 review
Marketed usePart of the energy chain inside mitochondria
Main cautionInteracts with warfarin; may affect blood pressure and blood sugar medicines.

02Dose

How does 100 mg compare with the doses in CoQ10 studies?

It sits at the bottom of the common research range. Blood pressure trials did best at about 100-200 mg a day, and the best-known heart failure trial used 300 mg (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response) (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014).

  • CoQ10

    matches the low end
    One capsule100 mg
Blood pressure trials, best range (2022 review)100-200 mg a day
    Q-SYMBIO heart-failure trial300 mg a day

One capsule meets the low end of the blood pressure trials and is a third of the Q-SYMBIO dose. (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response) (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014)

  • Shilajit extract

32% of the lowest studied dose
    One capsule80 mg
Small strength and hormone trials250-500 mg a day

80 mg is under a third of the lowest dose in the human trials, and none of them studied the heart. (Keller 2019 - shilajit strength RCT)

  • PQQ

50% of the lowest studied dose
    One capsule10 mg
    12-week memory trial20 mg a day

Half the amount in the one human trial we found, which tested memory, not the heart. (Food Funct 2023 - PQQ 20 mg trial)

The yellow bar is what one Cardio Clear 7 capsule holds, per the store listing (Simple Promise store listing). Navy bars are daily amounts of that ingredient alone in studies; a lighter extension shows a range.

So one capsule is a real, studied amount. Still, a study dose is not a promise. Nobody has tested the Cardio Clear 7 mix.

Amounts come from the store listing. Compare them with the Supplement Facts panel on your own bottle; see the label transcript.

03Blood pressure

What does research say about CoQ10 and blood pressure?

The answer depends on which review you read. A careful Cochrane review found no clinically significant effect, while a larger 2022 review found a small drop in the top number (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension) (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response).

CoQ10 and blood pressure: the two main reviews side by side
ReviewWho was studiedSystolic (top)Diastolic (bottom)
Cochrane 2016 (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension)2 trials, 50 people with primary hypertensionNo clinically significant changeNo clinically significant change
Zhao 2022 (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response)26 trials, 1,831 people with heart or metabolic conditionsAbout 4.77 mmHg lowerNot significant

The bigger review's trials were mostly small and short, and many people also took heart or diabetes medicines (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response). NCCIH says CoQ10 probably has no meaningful effect on blood pressure (NCCIH - Coenzyme Q10). Mayo Clinic says it "might" help (Mayo Clinic - Coenzyme Q10).

So Cardio Clear 7 is not a blood pressure treatment. See our blood pressure numbers guide.

04Heart failure

Does the Q-SYMBIO heart failure trial apply to healthy adults?

Not directly. Q-SYMBIO enrolled 420 people who already had chronic heart failure and kept them on their usual treatment (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014).

  1. The dose was three times higher

Patients took 100 mg three times a day, so 300 mg in total, for two years (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014).

  2. The main result was fewer major events

Major heart events happened in 15% of the CoQ10 group and 26% of the placebo group (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014).

  3. Some short-term measures did not move

At 16 weeks, walking distance, symptom class and a heart strain blood marker showed no significant change (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014).

  4. Industry helped pay for it

Lower death rates were secondary comparisons, and CoQ10 makers supported the study (Healio - Q-SYMBIO results report).

It tested sick patients under a doctor's care. NCCIH still calls the heart failure evidence inconclusive (NCCIH - Coenzyme Q10).

05Statins

Should people on statins take CoQ10?

That is a question for your doctor, and the evidence is split. Statins clearly lower the CoQ10 in your blood, but whether adding CoQ10 eases statin muscle aches is less clear (Qu 2018 - Statins lower CoQ10 levels).

On muscle symptoms, one review of 6 trials found no real benefit (Banach 2015 - CoQ10 statin myopathy). A later 12-trial review found less pain, with very uneven results (Qu 2018 JAHA - CoQ10 statin symptoms).

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never stop or change a statin, or any other prescription, because of a supplement. If a statin bothers your muscles, your provider can test, adjust or switch it (MedlinePlus - Statins).

06The ads

What is the 'One Common Vitamin' video about?

It is a brand sales video, not a study. CoQ10 is not actually a vitamin, since the body makes its own (NCI PDQ - Coenzyme Q10).

The FTC expects health claims to rest on solid human trials, not on stories (FTC - Health Products Compliance Guide). When an ad mentions CoQ10, check the dose and who was studied. Our guide to heart supplement ads shows more patterns.

07Safety

What are the side effects and drug interactions of CoQ10?

CoQ10 is usually well tolerated, and no serious side effects have been reported (NCCIH - Coenzyme Q10). The bigger concern is how it mixes with some medicines.

Warfarin users

Talk with the doctor who manages your INR before starting. More on side effects and interactions.

08Taking it

When is the best time to take CoQ10?

With a meal is a good habit. CoQ10 dissolves in fat, so food with some fat may help the body absorb it.

The store says one capsule a day with a meal (Simple Promise store listing); the info page says with or without food (Cardio Clear 7 info page). Pick the meal you never skip, such as breakfast.

If you already take another CoQ10 product, count both. Bring every bottle to your next checkup.

09FAQ

CoQ10 questions people search for

Is 100 mg of CoQ10 a day enough?

It is a common, studied amount. Blood pressure trials saw their best results at about 100-200 mg a day, so 100 mg is the low end. The heart failure trial Q-SYMBIO used 300 mg, three times what one Cardio Clear 7 capsule holds.

Does CoQ10 interact with blood thinners?

Yes, it can interact with warfarin, so take it only with your doctor's approval. CoQ10 may make warfarin work less well and raise the risk of clots, and bleeding has also been reported. If your doctor agrees, your INR may need checking more often after you start or stop it.

Should I take CoQ10 while on a statin?

Ask your doctor, because the evidence is mixed. One review of 6 trials found no clear benefit, while a review of 12 trials found less pain and cramping with very uneven results. Statins do lower blood CoQ10. Ask your doctor about muscle aches instead of stopping the statin.

Is CoQ10 a vitamin?

No. CoQ10 is a compound the body makes on its own, so it is not a vitamin, even though ads sometimes call it one. Statins lower its levels in the blood.

What form of CoQ10 is in Cardio Clear 7?

Ubiquinone. The brand photo shows ubidecarenone printed on the capsules, which is the chemical name for ubiquinone. Ubiquinol is the other common form.

Does CoQ10 raise or lower blood sugar?

The sources we checked do not say plainly that it lowers blood sugar. The National Cancer Institute says CoQ10 may change how the body uses insulin, so people on insulin or other diabetes medicine should ask their doctor before starting it.
