Ingredient profile
PQQ in Cardio Clear 7: a small dose of a young ingredient
Each Cardio Clear 7 capsule lists 10 mg of PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt), the smallest of its three actives. PQQ is sold for cell energy, but most research is in animals and test tubes. The one human trial we found used 20 mg a day for memory, and no trial has tested PQQ for the heart.

01The basics
What is PQQ?
PQQ stands for pyrroloquinoline quinone. It is a small compound that can pass electrons back and forth, which is why it gets linked to cell energy.
Tiny amounts turn up in everyday foods. Supplements use a lab-made form called PQQ disodium salt, and that is the form the store lists for Cardio Clear 7 (Simple Promise store listing). Each capsule holds 10 mg.
PQQ is not a vitamin, and the body does not need it from pills. It is marketed for mitochondria, the parts of cells that make energy, which pairs it with CoQ10 in many "cell energy" formulas. Read more in our PQQ explainer.
| Name on the store listing | PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone Disodium Salt) |
|---|---|
| What it is | A small redox compound found in some foods |
| Amount per capsule | 10 mg |
| Amount used in research | 20 mg a day in a 12-week memory trial |
| Strength of evidence | Thin: mostly animal and lab work; no heart trials found |
| Marketed use | Sold for mitochondria and cell energy |
| Main caution | Long-term safety and drug interactions are not well studied. |
02The research
What does research on PQQ show so far?
Mostly lab and animal results, with very few human trials. A 2024 review says more human trials are needed and that no best dose has been worked out (Yan 2024 - PQQ review).
Memory at 20 mg
62 healthy adults took 20 mg a day or placebo for 12 weeks. Memory scores improved. The maker of the PQQ fully funded the study (Food Funct 2023 - PQQ 20 mg trial).
No heart trials
We found no human trial of PQQ for blood pressure, cholesterol or heart outcomes. Its heart role is a theory, not a result.
Safety data scarce
Long-term safety and drug interactions have not been well studied, according to the 2024 review (Yan 2024 - PQQ review).
That memory trial is useful, but it is one study, and its age subgroups were small (Food Funct 2023 - PQQ 20 mg trial). It does not tell us what PQQ does for an older heart.
03Dose
How does 10 mg of PQQ compare with study doses?
It is half the amount in the only human trial we found. That trial used 20 mg a day for memory (Food Funct 2023 - PQQ 20 mg trial).
| Source | Amount | What it was for |
|---|---|---|
| Cardio Clear 7, one capsule (Simple Promise store listing) | 10 mg | Sold for cell energy |
| Memory trial (Food Funct 2023 - PQQ 20 mg trial) | 20 mg a day | Memory tests over 12 weeks |
| GRAS notice 625 (FDA GRN 625 - PQQ disodium salt) | Up to 8 mg per serving | Sport and energy drinks |
| GRAS notice 641 (FDA GRN 641 - PQQ disodium salt) | 5-20 mg per serving | Drinks and fortified water |
04Regulation
Did FDA approve PQQ?
No. FDA does not approve dietary supplements or their ingredients before sale (FDA - Dietary Supplements Q&A). What exists for PQQ are two "no questions" letters about its use in drinks (FDA GRN 625 - PQQ disodium salt) (FDA GRN 641 - PQQ disodium salt).
A company files a GRAS notice
The company says experts consider PQQ generally recognized as safe for a set food use and amount.
FDA replies
In 2016 FDA said it had no questions at this time about two such notices. It also said it had made no GRAS ruling of its own (FDA GRN 625 - PQQ disodium salt) (FDA GRN 641 - PQQ disodium salt).
The scope stays narrow
Both notices covered beverages. Neither one reviewed a capsule product like Cardio Clear 7.
So the letters are a reasonable sign at drink-level amounts. They are not a safety review of this formula.

What do the ingredient tiles on the brand graphic show?
They are cut from the brand's "Inside Cardio Clear 7" artwork. Each tile pairs a name with a picture. The bottle tile shows the product, not a lab test or a label panel.
Artwork can show what is in the formula. It cannot show how much works or for whom. For the full label text, see the supplement facts page. For how the three actives are meant to fit together, see how it works.

06Safety
Is PQQ safe?
Short trials have not raised clear alarms, but the safety record is thin. The 2024 review calls long-term safety data scarce and says interactions with common medicines are not well studied (Yan 2024 - PQQ review).
- Not for pregnant or nursing women, per the brand info page (Cardio Clear 7 info page)
- Taking any medicine? The brand says to ask your doctor first (Cardio Clear 7 info page)
- Count all sources: some energy drinks and multis also contain PQQ
Never stop or change a prescription because of a supplement. Ask your pharmacist to review the full Cardio Clear 7 label with your current list.
07More ingredients
Why is PQQ paired with CoQ10?
Because both are sold for mitochondria. The pairing makes sense on paper, but no study has tested the two together in people. The 100 mg of CoQ10 carries far more evidence than the 10 mg of PQQ.
08FAQ
PQQ questions people search for
Is PQQ safe?
Short studies have not shown clear problems, but data are limited. A 2024 review says long-term safety information is scarce and drug interactions are not well studied. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid Cardio Clear 7, and anyone on medicine should ask a doctor first.
What does PQQ do for the body?
It is sold to support mitochondria and cell energy. Most of that idea comes from animal and test-tube studies. The one human trial we found tested 20 mg a day for 12 weeks and measured memory scores, not energy or heart health.
What is the right PQQ dose?
No best dose has been set. Human research has used about 20 mg a day, and FDA letters about drinks cover 5-20 mg per serving. Cardio Clear 7 gives 10 mg in one capsule. Ask your doctor what makes sense for you.
Is PQQ an essential nutrient?
No. PQQ is not a recognized vitamin, and there is no official daily requirement for it. Small amounts occur in foods, and supplements use a lab-made salt form.
Is there heart research on PQQ?
Not in people. We found no study of PQQ for blood pressure, cholesterol or heart events. Its place in heart formulas rests on lab research about mitochondria, not on results in people.
Can you take PQQ and CoQ10 together?
Many products combine them, including Cardio Clear 7, but no human trial has tested the pair. CoQ10 interacts with warfarin, so blood thinner users should ask their doctor before taking any product that contains it.
