Do Heart Supplements Work? 4.8 mmHg, 2 Trials, 0 Cholesterol Effect
Heart health supplements are not one thing, so the answer depends on the ingredient. For CoQ10, one Cochrane review of 2 trials found no clinically significant blood pressure effect, and a 2022 review of 26 trials found about 4.8 mmHg lower. Our sources show no cholesterol effect. No supplement replaces prescribed medicine.

01At a glance
Key facts
- Blood pressure: a Cochrane review of 2 trials with 50 people found no clinically significant effect from CoQ10.
- A 2022 review of 26 trials with 1,831 people found systolic pressure about 4.8 mmHg lower, with no clear change in the bottom number.
- Cholesterol: the sources we use report no cholesterol effect from CoQ10.
- High cholesterol has no symptoms, and only a blood test shows your level.
- No supplement has been shown to do the job of a blood pressure pill or a statin.
- Habits matter more: about 150 minutes of activity a week, 7 to 9 hours of sleep and sodium at 2,300 mg a day or less.
02Short answer
Do heart health supplements work?
Some have a little evidence, most have none, and none replaces treatment. That is the honest summary, and it is less exciting than an ad.
The words heart health on a label are a structure and function claim. They describe a goal in broad terms. They are not a promise that a number on your blood pressure cuff or your lab report will move (21 CFR 101.93 - Supplement statements).
So the useful question is narrower. Which ingredient, at which dose, in whom, and measured how? The sections below ask that of CoQ10, the main active in Cardio Clear 7, and of the two categories people search for most.
03Blood pressure
Do blood pressure supplements work?
Take CoQ10 as the example. The two main reviews disagree. A Cochrane review pooled 2 trials with 50 people with primary hypertension and found no clinically significant change (Cochrane - CoQ10 and hypertension). A 2022 review pooled 26 trials with 1,831 people with heart or metabolic conditions. Systolic pressure was about 4.77 mmHg lower, and the bottom number did not change in a clear way (Zhao 2022 - CoQ10 BP dose-response).
| Review | People | Top number | Bottom number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cochrane 2016 | 2 trials, 50 people | No clinically significant change | No clinically significant change |
| Zhao 2022 | 26 trials, 1,831 people | About 4.77 mmHg lower | Not significant |
NCCIH's view is that CoQ10 probably does little for blood pressure (NCCIH - Coenzyme Q10). Many people in the larger review also took prescribed medicine, so the trial results do not map neatly onto one person.
A 4.8 mmHg change is small next to the AHA's categories: under 120/80 is normal, 130-139 or 80-89 is stage 1, and 140 or 90 and up is stage 2 (AHA - Understanding BP Readings). It would not move most people from one group to the next.
04Cholesterol
Do cholesterol supplements work?
For CoQ10, our sources show no cholesterol effect at all. Its research centers on blood pressure, heart failure and statin muscle symptoms (NCCIH - Coenzyme Q10).
Cholesterol matters, and it is silent. Nearly 25 million US adults have total cholesterol above 240 mg/dL, and many do not know it. Of the adults who might gain from cholesterol medicine, just 54.5% take it (CDC - High Cholesterol Facts).
The only way to know your level is a blood test ordered by your care team (CDC - About Cholesterol). Many lab reports call an LDL under 100 mg/dL optimal, but your own goal depends on your wider risk.
Be wary of any listing that promises to regulate cholesterol. A claim to treat a condition like high cholesterol reads like a disease claim under the supplement rule. That is our reading, and FDA has not ruled on this product (21 CFR 101.93 - Supplement statements).
05The big trial
Why do ads quote the heart-failure trial?
Because the numbers sound large. In Q-SYMBIO, major heart events were 15% in the CoQ10 group and 26% in the placebo group over 2 years (Q-SYMBIO trial - JACC HF 2014).
But those were 420 people with chronic heart failure, taking 300 mg a day on top of full treatment. Industry helped fund the work, and the death figures were secondary results (Healio - Q-SYMBIO results report). A healthy adult on 100 mg sits far from that picture.
Ask who was studied, what dose they took, how long it lasted and who paid. If an ad cannot say, the number is decoration.
06Statins
Can a supplement replace a statin or a blood pressure pill?
No supplement has been shown to do that job. Statins have large trials behind them, and they lower LDL by slowing how much the liver makes (MedlinePlus - Statins). They also lower your own CoQ10, which is why users ask about CoQ10 pills.
Whether extra CoQ10 eases statin muscle aches is unsettled. One review of 6 trials found no benefit, and another of 12 trials found less pain with uneven results (Banach 2015 - CoQ10 statin myopathy) (Qu 2018 JAHA - CoQ10 statin symptoms).
Muscle pain on a statin is worth a call to your clinician. The statin stays as prescribed until they say otherwise.

07What matters more
Which habits move heart numbers more than a capsule?
Move
About 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, such as brisk walks, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (AHA - Life's Essential 8)
Eat
A DASH-style plate of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, fish, beans and nuts, with sodium at 2,300 mg a day or less (NHLBI - DASH Eating Plan)
Sleep
Seven to nine hours a night for adults, and no tobacco, two more of the AHA's eight measures
These habits cost little and have public guidance behind them. A capsule can sit beside them. It cannot stand in for them.
08How to choose
How do you pick a heart health supplement sensibly?
- Read the amount of each active and compare it with the dose studied.
- Ask for the study, who was in it and who paid.
- Check for a named maker and a lab report.
- Look at the guarantee in writing, and who pays return postage.
- Show the label to your pharmacist, especially if you take warfarin, a statin, blood pressure medicine or insulin.
Cardio Clear 7 passes some of these lines and misses others. It lists every amount and offers 365 days to return bottles. It does not name its maker, publish a lab report or have a trial of its own. If your chest hurts, your arm or jaw aches, or you cannot catch your breath, call 911 first and read labels later.

11Bottom line
Our view
Do heart supplements work? A fair answer is: a little, for a few ingredients, in some people, and never in place of treatment. CoQ10 earns a place in that sentence. Most of the rest of the shelf does not.
For Cardio Clear 7, that means modest expectations. It carries a studied amount of CoQ10 and two add-ons at small doses, and the capsule itself has no trial.
Put your effort where the evidence is strongest: checks, food, movement, sleep and the medicines your doctor prescribed. Cardio Clear 7 is not FDA approved, and no dietary supplement is.
